Tickle Theory
There is no "tickle fiber." Tickling is pain + pressure + something else โ surprise; you can't tickle yourself. Comedy runs the same recipe:
Press a real sore spot, hold the pressure, then pull the rug โ an on-the-nose honest twist โ and the brain installs the funny as a weapon. The heavy thing becomes carryable.
The Rug-Pull โ a pain-gate
A joke relieves pain the way rubbing a banged elbow does: gate control. The funny is the counter-signal that overrides the pain fiber. Two parts make it land:
Personal, on-the-nose, the exact tender spot. Vary it โ never build a whole set on one wound.
Delivery and voice. Half the joke. The same words in the Devil's mouth land differently than in Bob Ross's.
The Laugh-Meter
It scores the real laugh โ the one you can't fake โ by the body's burst pattern, not a click you can game. A polite "haha" sits flat and steady; a real laugh bursts. The bullshit meter catches the flat one and doesn't count it.
That's why it can't be gamed โ and why the house gets funnier to you the more you play: it learns from what your body actually did, stored on your device, never sent anywhere.
It thinks โ it isn't canned
The engine reads what you actually said and riffs live, fresh each time โ no fixed lines. It can overhear something funny and break the fourth wall to rip on it (see the Devil catching "sea-sourced" on the Specials page). And if the laugh keeps missing, it doesn't push harder โ that's a friend-signal, and the house gently checks if something's up.
So real it's funny โ never real enough to hurt.
Defender-side, always. We riff on the sound, not the person's real pain. And it's medicine: adjunct, never a replacement. A flat, joyless body is a door to Health โ not a harder joke.
Why laughter is actually medicine
Not a vibe โ there's a body of research behind it. A sample of what a real laugh does:
Hearty laughter is associated with lower cortisol and adrenaline โ the stress-hormone load comes down. (Berk et al., mirthful-laughter studies.)
Social laughter raises the pain threshold, consistent with an endorphin release. (Dunbar et al., 2011.)
Laughter has been linked to increased natural-killer-cell activity โ the body's front-line defense. (Bennett & Berk humor-immune work.)
Therapeutic humor is used clinically to lift mood and buffer anxiety โ the whole basis of applied humor therapy. (AATH โ Assoc. for Applied & Therapeutic Humor.)
Honest framing: this is adjunct support, not a cure and not a replacement for care. It's why the dose has to be real โ and why the Laugh-Meter measures an honest laugh, not a polite one.
